Finally Fridays – Northern Astoria

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Here are five delicious things you can find in the northern part of Astoria.

olives

You can get these and a whole variety of olives, sweets, and tasty treats at Parrot Market. Parrot is one of my favorite shops in town – they have a lot of Eastern European foods, and a good selection of bulk nuts and dried fruits. I like the homemade phyllo dishes, too. Parrot European Market, 31-12 Ditmars Boulevard.

23/365 mini sesame special

Of all the bagel stores in town, I like Astoria Bagels best. I used to love them primarily because they served jalepeno cream cheese, but really, the bagels are simply delicious. Astoria Bagel Shop, 28-12 Ditmars Boulevard, 718-728-5169.

smoked pork and sauerkraut

Koliba is probably the best Czech/Slovak restaurant in Astoria. Their pork dishes are amazing, and their spaetlze are delicious as well. Great beer, too, of course! Koliba Restaurant, 31-11 23rd Avenue, 718-626-0430.

Chips and Salsa

Mojave’s chips and salsa are a great way to start a meal there. I’ve tasted their salsas over the time they’ve been open, and they just keep getting better and better. Mojave, 22-36 31st Street, 718-545-4100.

Pan Cake

Although my heart belongs to the completo, I do love the cakes at San Antonio Bakery #2. The “pan cake” is my favorite – thin layers of cake with dulce de leche in between. Magical. San Antonio Bakery #2, 3620 Astoria Boulevard, 718-777-8733.
