What To Do This Weekend, 4/29/10

It’s so exciting to know that a beautiful, warm weekend is coming.  Temperatures are supposed to peak in the mid 80′s, which is encouraging and so conducive to being outside.  But even so, there are great things to do inside too – here is our best of both of worlds.  You choose what you want to do:

Friday – Saturday:
A really cool performance is taking place this Friday – Saturday at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center.  For all you Radiohead fans, you’re not going to want to miss this, as a dance troupe performs to their melodramatic tunes with a funky backdrop – a NYC block.  Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.  The performance starts at 8 p.m.   31-10 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City.  718.482.5151.

Anytime!
With the upcoming gorgeous weather, how could you not hit up one of our legendary Beer GardensBohemian Hall or Studio Square, the choice is yours.  Both have great beer on tap and although the experience is very different at both, they are very enjoyable.  Just check out the article in this month’s Bon Appetit – it should help to convince you further.  I encourage you to bring cards or my favorite game, Apples to Apples to liven things up and even meet some new friends along the way.  Bohemian Hall – 29-19 24th Avenue, Astoria.  718.274.4925.  Studio Square – 35-33 36th Street, Long Island City. 718.383.1001.

If you want to eat outside and enjoy the best Greek food (in my opinion), hit up Taverna Kyclades on Ditmars Blvd.  Sure you should expect at least a half hour wait, but it is completely and utterly worth it.  When deciding what to eat, I recommend the grilled calamari or the stuffed shrimp (pictured above).  As a starter, the skordalia is the best I’ve had in Astoria and for a toasty pick-me-up, their house wine is not too shabby.  33-07 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria.  718.545.8666

Or if you want to “eat ‘n run,” check out the newly opened cafe by the same name.  The menu is healthful and you can enjoy a light breakfast or a fun sandwich such as Turkey-Frutti (turkey, granny smith apples on dark fitness bread), take it to go and eat it in the park.  Corner of 33rd Street & Astoria Blvd, Astoria.  718.204.2760

Do you crave some good old fashioned weekend relaxation?  Indulge in a leisurely, long stroll with your significant other, your family or friends.  Trees and flowers are in full bloom and the neighborhood looks really gorgeous.  Whether in Astoria or LIC, I encourage you to grab a refreshing gelato from either Terrizzi Pasticceria (Astoria) or the Food Cellar (LIC) that will make your walk that much better. Terrizzi Pasticceria – 35-14 30th Avenue, Astoria.  718.726.9698.  Food Cellar – 4-85 47th Road, Long Island City.  718.606.9786
