What To Do This Weekend, 7/29/10

by mackenzi on July 29, 2010

Can you believe it’s almost August? I can’t. As this summer heat drags on, here are some great things to do around town to stay cool and have fun!

The much anticipated Red Mango finally opened in Astoria! Check out their new Steinway digs and pick up a cool treat. A quick stop in this past week found me converted- no high fructose corn syurp like a certain other ‘colorful’ yogurt place, live probiotics, and nearly all their great flavors are naturally fat free. They have a few great opening specials going on too.

Be sure to show some love to all the great Astoria businesses that didn’t make the TONY cut. What about a stroll up to the Ditmars area? See what’s new at Blooming Company, KrisTees, or Inside Astoria and then have a bite at local favorites Wave Thai, Bistro 33, or Mojave. I’m partial to spending a little quality time at Rosario’s too, a fantastic little Italian grocery located just under the train on 31st st.

Also, don’t forget about the Water Walk going on Sunday up and down Shore Blvd. near the park. More details here.

Astoria Water Walk on Sunday

by megc on July 29, 2010

This weekend hails the second year of the Astoria Water Walk!

What is the Astoria Water Walk? It’s a celebration of fun on Shore Blvd along Astoria Park, in the role of a Temporary Pedestrian Street.  The street will be closed to car traffic, and open to pedestrians, bikes, and more people-scaled activity. Festivities go from 1-7pm for the next three Sundays, August 1st, August 8th and August 15th.

The Astoria Park Alliance, along with Green Shores NYC, the NYC Department of Transportation, Edible Queens, Astoria Music & Arts, Partnerships for Parks, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, BIG! NYC, the Rock Health & Fitness, GrowNYC are behind all of this.   Here’s more info:

Astoria Water Walk brings the DOT’s successful Summer Streets Program to the Western Queens Waterfront. Spontaneous relaxation, as well as fun & games on Shore Blvd is expected and encouraged. All activities are FREE.

Astoria Park is Western Queens’ largest park and features tennis courts, a running track, playgrounds, basketball courts, bucolic lawns and the City’s largest outdoor swimming pool. Its East River shoreline provides breathtaking views of the skyline and two bridges. It is heavily used by children, families, boaters, cyclists, runners, and motorists and is home to fish, crabs, birds, and aquatic plants.

Shore Boulevard will be closed to motorized vehicles during the Astoria Water Walk.

July 27, 2010

Today I received an email from Testaccio restaurant, the Roman restaurant in LIC that opened in the past year.  Their email announced a new “Gnocchi Night” – all you can eat gnocchi for $20.  Normally I’m not a real “all you can eat” kind of gal, but gnocchi is one of my favorite foods.  I [...]

Mackenzi Hearts M. Wells

July 20, 2010

I had the amazingly good fortune to dine at M. Wells yesterday for brunch, and it certainly did not disappoint. The tiny retro diner car sized restaurant is the newest addition to Long Island City’s somewhat sleepy food scene. Opened by a veteran of the Quebec restaurant Au Pied de Cochon, this diner is bursts [...]
